Chimuzo
Built a biomedical device to help his brother — and filed a provisional patent
The Story
When Chimuzo saw his brother struggling with chronic back pain from a spinal condition, he decided to do something about it. Rather than accepting the problem, he turned it into an engineering solution. Working alongside his Personify mentor, Chimuzo built a functioning biomedical device designed to improve posture and reduce back pain. The wearable uses a tilt-sensitive sensor to detect slouching — when the spine tilts beyond a preset angle, a small vibration motor gently reminds the wearer to straighten up. All the electronics (sensor, battery, control circuitry, and vibration motor) are integrated into a lightweight housing worn discreetly on the upper back. Personify guided him through the entire engineering and product-development process, and Chimuzo took it even further by filing a provisional patent for his invention.
Outcomes
- Built a working wearable biomedical device to improve posture
- Filed a provisional patent for his invention
- Integrated sensor, battery, circuitry, and vibration motor into one housing
- Solved a real problem affecting his own family
